Strategic Leadership for Workforce Development in the “New Norm”

The kick-off session will drive home the understanding that recruitment, retention and employee development is EVERYBODY’S job—it is a team effort involving every employee, not just the ones with HR after their title! How well you recruit, retain and develop employees and your culture WILL determine your competitive niche moving forward. Specifically, Tom will cover strategies to attack the changing industry environment in area of succession planning; image and identity of the profession and getting past the whining and complaining stage. Additionally, he will discuss reinventing and redefining your leadership as a team, recognize that our industry is better off today than a decade ago and will pinpoint strategies for identifying distinctive opportunities for the future of the construction profession.

Typically, everyone has the goal of maintaining a robust workforce, one that has the right people in the right positions. In addition, you hope you have the right system and culture in place to keep employees in your firm and excited to be there! Also, we know this is getting to be a harder and more challenging goal to achieve. Chad’s presentation will be a rapid-fire presentation covering a wealth of current topics and strategies:

  • Review what recruiting strategies may improve your chances of initially getting the right people in the door.
  • Discuss the role technology in the recruitment process.
  • Methods to “excite” and catch the attention of prospects; i.e. describing the job’s work/rewards/personal development.
  • How important are written “job descriptions” to recruiting and retaining employees.
  • Employee retention—what NOT to do.
  • Discuss the role employee performance review plays in employee retention.

Recruiting outside the box—learn about key groups of folks that may be a new source of hires to the construction industry. You will learn about programs that provide work-ready skills, help youth (age 16-24) launch into their work life, connect retiring military personnel with careers and guide the folks re-training or realigning their careers. The panel will also cover success stories and strategies for making connections with the programs and participants. Hopefully, dialogue between everyone in the session will lead to new connections that will be successful for all.
