What is Emerging Construction Professionals Forum?
The Emerging Construction Professionals Forum is an opportunity for your employees to develop into the future leaders of Nebraska's commercial construction industry. The forum focuses on professional and leadership development. It is provided as a member service by the sponsoring associations. There is no charge to participants.

What is the function?
For the 2008-09 Session the forum's overall goal is to enhance participant's professional development through programming in the area of advancing technology and business management.

All forums start at 5:30 pm, lasting no more than two hours. The forums will be held at the Electrical Eudcation Center, Room 306 at 8960 L Street in Omaha.

AGC's Supervisory Training Program (STP) offered online via the internet. The STP courses will be offered by the Nebraska Building Chapter by contract with Southeast Community College Continuing Education Division.

STP is designed specifically to meet the needs of the construction industry. Developed for contractors by AGC of America, the Program consists of 10 courses that focus on the knowledge and skills that every supervisor must have to be an effective manager of people, time, equipment and materials. Courses can be completed in any order. Upon completion of all the courses you will receive a Certificate of Completion from AGC of America.

Each online course will consist of approximately 24 hours of instruction and be divided into six learning weeks of structured activities and discussion. However, the beauty of online learning allows you the flexibility to choose the hours you devote to the course on a day-to-day basis. Each learning week will require about a five hour commitment on your part. The courses will be taught on a a Pass/Fail basis, with a certificate of completion awarded at the end of each course based on level of proficiency and participation.

2008-09 ECPF Schedule
"Understanding & Managing Project Costs" October 20 - November 30
This training covers undestanding how project estimates are compiled, how to compare actual project costs with those estimated and how to control costs to meet estimate.
"Productivity Improvement" December 1 - February 1, 2009

This course details how productivity is measured, how the supervisor plays a major role in increasing jobsite productivity, and how a small increase in productivity can have a significant impact on the time and cost of a project.

"General & Specialty Contractor Dynamics" February 2 - March 15

This course emphasizes the role construction supervisors play in construction systems.

This two day course will cover current topics like LEED. Estimating for Green Buildings, Estimating with Electronic Documents. Managing Preconstruction, and Conceptual Estimating. Led by industry experts, participants will discover and discuss the most compelling components of construction estimating and learn how to apply them to their next project.

"The Profitability of Safety"
November 20, Morning Program

This course focuses on the equation: Effective Safety Programs = Fewer Accidents = Lower Insurance Costs. We will explore the method used to calculate a company's Experience Modification Rate (EMod), how to read and Interpret the EMod calculation worksheet, and what errors to watch for. Discussion of the costs of accidents that are not covered by insurance. Instruction of the many ways a company can manage the EMod. Why aggressive light duty programs make good sense, financially and morally. Why the REAL reason a company needs a safety program, what it needs to contain, and why it must be a core value int he company to be effective. Review resources on getting a safety program started in the Company. Also discussed are OSHA record keeping requirements, and how to determine recordable accidents.

"Knowing the Score"
November 20, Afternoon program

The objective of this course is to give the participants understanding on why it is critical to the health of the company to monitor both job costs and the overall company finances at least monthly. Every employee plays a part in these processes. With working examples provided, participants will learn what information should be provided on a good Job Status Report and Work In Progress Report. Explanation on how forecast costs-at-completion are critical to knowing the score of the company and the project. Discussion of methods to make forecasting easier, concept of over/under billing, profit vs/ markup, why projects margins fade or gain, and risk in change orders. Depending on the audience, brief discussion of financial statements and how to read them, and key financial ratios.

Speaker, Kathryn Crosby is President and Owner of C2 Consulting, Inc., a firm that provides financial, safety and other consulting services and training.

Prior to starting her own business, she was VP/CFO for a Utah-based commercial and industrial mechanical contractor. She served on the Mechanical Contractors Association of America (MCAA) National Board of Directors and was Chairperson of the Project Managers Education Committee charged with oversight of the Institute for Project Management at the University of Texas, Austin.

She currently serves on the faculty for the Institute for Project Management, Construction Education Institute, MCAA's National Education Institute, and the United Association's Instructor Training Course in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Fall Conference Program
"How to Market, Sell, Start Up and Deliver a Green Project"
November 21

The 2008 Nebraska Building Chapter Fall Conference will reflect recent changes in the industry; "green" and "sustainable" projects are becoming ever more popular. This session is designed to review the differences between a green building and a traditional project.

The team of JC Burton and Reed Thomas, will jointly present a three part education series addressing one of the most recognized paradigm shifts in the industry - Sustainability. Green impacts all project types: office, medical, education, retail and residential markets.

BIM Demonstration & "Test Drive" Workshop

January, 2009
Planned by AGC - Nebraska Building Chapter and AIA - Nebraska. This seminar will be co-sponsored by MCA, ACEC Nebraska and others. The workshop is in the planning stages and details/date will be announced very soon.

This will be a half day workshop. The workshop is being designed to provide an dintroduction, demonstration and an opportunity to actually have some one-on-one time "trying out" the building information modeling software at a computer station. Registration will be limited in each workshop, so there will be two sessions scheduled.

 

Regional Member Meetings

Based on the well attended member meetings last season, the format of a sound educational program, industry updates, chapter happenings and a little member networking all rolled into a two hour or less format, will be continued. Since Fall Conference is in the later part of November the first series of Regional Meetings will be held in late October. A second and third series will be held in February and early April. Some of the Omaha breakfast meetings will be joint meetings with MCA and NECA. Also, members in Lincoln have requested we add a Lincoln meeting to each series so that will happen this season.

State Senator's Luncheon 12:00 pm (noon) at the State Capital, Lincoln. All members are invited to attend. We are co-hosting this luncheon with AIA-Nebraska and ACEC Nebraska.

March 4 - 10
AGC of America Convention - San Diego, CA

If there is enough interest, a LEED - AP Test Prep course will be held in January or February. This is typically an 8-hour training spread over 3 - 4 sessions. Also, an 8-hour commercial blue print reading class will be scheduled in central Nebraska during the winter months.
