2007 ANNUAL REPORT – AGC NEBRASKA BUILDING CHAPTER

The AGC-Nebraska Building Chapter's Board of Directors and Staff are proud to report to the membership the accomplishments of the Association during 2007. The Staff has successfully carried out the traditional and customary services that the membership expects from the Association. The goals and activities identified in the 2005-07 Strategic Plan, adopted by the Board in October 2005, were successfully accomplished during the past two years. This report will provide the "highlights" and a "report card" of how we did in 2007.

EDUCATION/TRAINING

  • Offered six courses of the AGC of America's Supervisory Training Program (STP Series) to the membership through online training courses. Total registration for the six courses was 142. Two grants, totaling $10,500, were provided by the Nebraska Workers Training Fund to off-set the cost to members participating in the online training.
  • Fall Conference had a new venue this year. The conference was held in two parts. Part 1 was a one-day FMI Seminar attended by 62 members in Kearney in October and Part 2 was an afternoon summit on the War for Talent attended by 144 in Lincoln at the end of November.
  • The Building Chapter hosted two national AGCA trainings in 2007. The three-day Safety Management Training was held in Omaha and was attended by 42 people from all across the US. Also, the one-day Focus Four Safety training was held in Lincoln and Omaha in February with a total attendance of 125 people.
  • Regional Member Meetings were held two times in Scottsbluff and Lincoln/Omaha Metro area and one each in Norfolk and Kearney.

FUTURE WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT ACTIVITIES

  • The AGC Student Chapters at each of the colleges are thriving and have combined membership of over 200 students. The Building Chapter provides training for the officer teams each fall and two student seminars in the fall and spring each year. In addition, we award funding for projects at each chapter, contribute to students attending the National AGC Convention and award five-$1,000 scholarships each spring.
  • The Emerging Construction Professional Forum became reality this year. Two-hour, monthly forums were held in March, April, September, October and November. Attendance average was 15-20 "younger" professionals each time, with 60 individuals signed up for the bi-weekly E-Leadership newsletter. Topics have ranged from management "style," leadership skills to personal finance.
  • FutureForce Nebraska provided a $10,000 grant this year to provide construction career awareness curriculum to middle-school students across the state. With assistance from members we provided materials to 18 schools this year.

LEGISLATIVE

  • All of our previous hard work paid off this year in the legislature. The Governor included the repeal of sales tax on construction labor in his tax reduction bill, included representatives from our Chapter in his Revenue Committee hearing and after committee negotiations and all floor debate ended up included in LB 367 that was passed.
  • The Spring Golf Outing, as in 2006, had $25.00 of each registration fee earmarked for the Nebraska Construction Industry PAC fund. The 2006 outing provided $2,550 for the fund, followed by the 2007 contribution of $3,600. Hopefully, we will have another sell-out outing in '08 so that we will be close to replacing the $10,000 that will be needed to contribute to the pro-business candidates competing for the 20+ seats in the 2009 Legislature.

INDUSTRY AFFAIRS

The Association staff responded to approximately 150 requests for information and resources, along with representing member's concerns at numerous meetings with government agencies and other groups. Other than cloning a workforce and printing money, requests for resources were all provided. The Executive Director is involved with many local and statewide entities, along with active participation in AGC of America activities and events.

MEMBER COMMUNICATION

During the summer the Board of Directors worked on updating the Strategic Plan and developing the Plan for Work for 2008-09. The input for this update and plan was provided by all members of the Chapter via the telephone interviews that Jean conducted with the majority of the members during June and early July. The telephone interviews validated that we are on the "right track" and provided the ideas and direction for the next two years.

GENERAL ASSOCIATION ADMINISTRATION

  • The membership retention and growth objectives were again met this year. The 2007 Budget was successfully implemented as planned. As in 2006, income exceeded expenses so the chapter will be able to move excess funds into the cash reserve accounts at year end.
  • The membership's generosity was truly appreciated during the year. The Association fund raising efforts provided $17,000 for the Education Fund to support the five AGC Student Chapters and $5600 to add to the AGC Student Scholarship Fund. Thank you to all.
  • 2007 has been a good year for the Nebraska Building Chapter. Also, as a state chapter, our members have reaped the benefits provided by our national affiliate, AGC of America. The Building Chapter Executive Staff, along with the staff at AGC of America, will continue to embrace and build on the following philosophies:
    • A customer service culture
    • Alignment of products and services with their mission
    • Data-driven strategies
    • Dialogue and engagement between staff, board and members
    • The CEO as a broker of ideas
    • Organizational adaptability
    • Alliance building

I hope you use this report to evaluate the investment you have made in the Nebraska Building Chapter and AGC of America, to get more for your membership and take advantage of our services.
