What is on tap for this season? Here are some insights from Jerry on each course.

Understanding and Managing Project Costs

I don’t know if you have experienced the backwash from the current economic climate but most of our clients are trying to build their projects with rising material and labor costs, ridiculous fuel prices, funding capability cut to the quick and an election year looming. It sounds like Understanding and Managing Project Costs is a very timely subject.

The course will concentrate on three main issues.
1. We will address the project from the inception. Pre-design and Design phase budget and schedule creation is a serious topic that benefits from the contractor’s early involvement.
2. We will discuss the means and methods for controlling costs from the estimate through the entire construction period, including the control measures implemented through our personnel, and our subcontractors as they address the problems, risks and losses of a project.
3. We will look at the benefits of a complete cost control system. Cost control management and documentation is the single most important factor in creating our data base for future work.

Productivity Improvement
Throughout the entire STP series we have discussed the importance of the supervisory staff and on-site workers. This session will sum up the management requirements.

There are three main issues involved.
1. We will learn how to identify, quantify and modify productivity.
2. We will discuss the management of the events that are defined as productivity. These include our work force, the subcontractors and the material & equipment that support those groups.
3. We will review the importance of information. Communication and technology have changed a lot on our projects and we will talk about those changes.

General and Specialty Contractor Dynamics
We have all heard the phrase “this is a team…” In this final course of the series we will tie all we have learned to that phrase. We will explore the relationships between team members in detail. Each member has a different set of responsibilities to the project. Often times the general contractor must understand and coordinate the “rest of the team”. This coordination is complex so we will try to answer some of the questions.
