Fall Conference Program Topic; Lean Construction -September 24th & 25th

Ted Garrison will be presenting, “How to Increase Productivity by Using the Principles of Lean Construction”.  You might be asking, “What exactly IS lean construction?  Over the next couple of weeks the E-Updates will feature some background resources on lean construction to help you better understand the concepts to be discussed.

This issue covers the question, “What is lean construction and why should I attend training about it?”

The reason you should attend a seminar on lean construction is because it delivers real value to project owners.  Lean construction seeks to better meet customer needs while using less of everything required to complete a construction project.  While traditional construction management practices have similar end goals, lean construction is better able to deliver value because it focuses on production management principles, extending the planning process to the “nuts and bolts” level of construction, thus improving accountability and performance at the crew level.

Guidelines for Nebraska Supplemental General Conditions to AIA A201 (2007)

Earlier this year the Nebraska Design and Construction Industry Council prepared a supplemental guideline for use in Nebraska.  The AIA-Nebraska Board of Directors, the Building Chapter’s Board of Directors, and the American Council of Engineering Companies-Nebraska Board have all approved the “Guideline” at their respective board meetings.  A cover letter, signed by each association and the “Guidelines for Nebraska” are now available on the Chapter’s website to be downloaded and printed for your use.

The document is located in the “Useful Links” area of the home page.

Industry And Business Affairs Issues

There are many industry issues going on at the local level all the time.  On an ongoing basis I monitor issues at the state level. However, I run out of hours in the day to monitor all the agendas for council meetings, education boards, county commissioner meetings, etc. across the state.  I rely on all of you at the local level to bring issues to my attention that you would like the Chapter to address.  Do not hesitate to call or email me on local issues.  I will try my best to provide Chapter assistance.  In recent months the Chapter’s efforts have been focused on unrealistic bidding requirement at Metropolitan Community College (Note: At the 7-28-09 meeting the Board of Governor’s suspended the bidding requirement until Feb. 2010); met with Mayor Suttle regarding the “preferred business program” and working on an issue in western Nebraska.

Woods & Aitken White Paper On Current Legal Issue

The Building Chapter asked  Woods & Aitken to review issues facing contractors who enter into a construction contract with an owner that prohibits the use of any employee on the project who has a criminal record that includes “crimes of a serious nature”.   School or church client contracts are likely to include these types of clauses.  Erin Gerdes has authored the White Paper that identifies the problems with contract provisions currently being used by owners, the law involved in conducting a background check, and possible, realistic alternatives to those provisions that could be proposed to owners instead.  If you would like a copy contact Jean at jdpetsch@windstream.net
