LEGISLATIVE UPDATE

The 101st session of the Nebraska Legislature opens on Wednesday, January 7th. Committee membership, Committee leadership and bill introduction will take up the first 10 days of the session. During that time, bills that are of interest to us will be listed in the Legislative Update section of www.agcnebuilders.com. As the bills go through the hearing process more information and comments will be communicated to you via the Legislative ALERT in the Member’s Only section of our website. You must have the current username and password to access that section. The current 2008 username/password will stay in place until February.

The Building Chapter, Nebraska Chapter, MCA-Omaha and NECA have been working on fine tuning a version of the Construction Prompt Pay Act that we can all support and live with. Sen White is interested in this legislation so hopefully we will all be on the same page.

Another bill that will likely be introduced is one that will require the use of E-Verify for new hires. Many of you are already using E-Verify so please contact Jean by phone or email regarding your thoughts and concerns on this issue.

The prediction from AGCA is that the Executive Order requiring the use of E-Verify on Federal projects contracted on or after January 15th may be rescinded by the new Administration after January 20th. Time will tell!

CONTRACTOR DATABASE IS NOW AVAILABLE

Remember, starting January 1, 2009 you must verify that subcontractors are in the Nebraska Department of Revenue’s Contractor Data Base. Click here to view the link.

If you have questions or concerns call or email Jean.

AGCA LAUNCHES "WE ARE READY" CAMPAIGN

On December 11, 2008, AGCA launched a new national effort to ensure that Congress and the President-elect understand the vital need for investing in infrastructure as part of the pending stimulus package. The centerpiece of this effort is, frankly, you. AGCA is encouraging people to sign up and indicate their support for badly needed new infrastructure investments. AGCA will share this list with members of Congress when they return to work on January 6th, and also will provide it to the President-elect’s transition team. To add your support go to this link:  http://www.agc.org/cs/lets_build
