Update on Student Chapter Activities

An important goal of developing into a well rounded professional is understanding the importance of becoming a part of your community and giving back to the community through service work. This is an important goal of our AGC Student Chapters also.

Here is an update on several community service projects going on this fall.

Members of the Iowa Western Community College Chapter donate time and their expertise to the Habitat for Humanity Council Bluffs.

Members of the Southeast Community College Chapter developed an outreach program to young children about building construction.  Pictured here are the members that conducted a program for the Lincoln Children’s Museum.

The SCC Chapter also sponsored a Career Fair on campus for AGC Building Chapter member firms in August.

UNL Student Chapter has over 20 members volunteer for a playground construction project for Trinity Lutheran School in Lincoln.

UNL

UNL Chapter members also volunteer for roadside clean-up along Hwy 34 northwest of Lincoln.

UNO Student Chapter members have been volunteering for the Viking Ship community Center in north Omaha.  The members supervised high school students performing light construction work on the building.

Wrap-Up from Last Week's Events

The Building Chapter hosted the AGCA-ASPE Estimating Academy in Omaha. This academy was attended by 49 participants. Attendees came from points reaching to CA, ID, MN, MA, LA and TX. There were 11 attendees from Nebraska and a fair number from the surrounding states also. The Estimating Academy will be held again in March, 2009, along with the AGC National Convention in San Diego, CA.

Great attendance at last week’s regional member meetings in Omaha, Lincoln and Kearney! A total of 175 members turned out to listen to Ken Simonson, AGCA Chief Economist. Ken also enjoyed his day spent in traveling across Nebraska.  If you would like to receive Ken’s Digital Digest send a request to simonsonk@agc.orgClick here to view the PowerPoint from Ken’s presentation.

Important Question for Members

Several members have mentioned that recently they have seen more and more project bids with a requirement to hold their bids open for 60 or more days. (These are aside from Federal projects.) Since we all know how quickly the economic environment can change, this practice created a very high risky situation for the GC. IS THIS PRACTICE BECOMING WIDE SPREAD? DO WE NEED TO BE EXPLORING PROACTIVE STRATEGIES TO TRY TO LESSEN THIS RISK? Send a quick email to jdpetsch@alltel.net to share your thoughts.

Southeast Community College Placement Center has a New Website

SCC is excited about the user-friendly website that will connect business with SCC graduates and current student. The full-service website for EMPLOYERS can be found at https://placement.southeast.edu/
